The pet care industry is booming right now. Nearly everyone is hiring pet care professionals. In fact, nearly everyone in the service industries is hiring, period. There has never been a period in history so optimal for job seekers. This is great for those looking for jobs but creates challenges to those looking to hire for jobs.
If you’re currently (and desperately) trying to hire help for your pet care business, join the club. The current climate is making finding and keeping quality people more challenging than ever. It’s harder but not impossible! You can find and hire the help you need but you’re going to have to get a little creative and broaden your search. It’s no longer going to be sufficient to do what you’ve always done (what most people have done). Simply posting a position on a job board like indeed.com or putting notices up at your local vet clinic isn’t going to produce the results you need.
So let’s get creative! Here are 5 places to look for pet care help that you may not have tapped into.
- Respond to sitter requests on Nextdoor.com
If you’re on nextdoor.com you’ve probably seen neighbors asking for pet sitting services. You also generally see a few people respond to the requests. You can contact each of the people who respond and ask them about if they’d be interested in working for you.
- Reach out to sitters who have worked for you in past.
I’m not talking about all of them. I’m talking about the ones that were amazing sitters and left on good terms because their life circumstances didn’t permit them to continue working with you. Circumstances have changed! Remind them that they are welcome to come back.
- Join local Facebook group that are related to your business and post there.
This doesn’t have to be a pet related group. Think wider. Perhaps there’s a stay-at-home mom FB group with a ton of great potential dog walkers just looking for something to do while their kids are in school. Do ask the FB group organizer for permission to post though. Some will say no and that’s okay. Some will recognize that you have something to offer their members and give you a forum.
- Join sites like care.com or rover.com where pet sitters advertise for clients.
These are great places to find sitters who are already looking for pet care jobs and might want to talk to you about working for your pet care company. You may need to pay a small monthly fee for these sites to interact fully with these sitters but it’s worth it if you find a great hire.
- Hold a job fair.
This doesn’t have to be a grand event. You can set up a table at a local dog park or anyplace where animal lovers congregate and hand out information on your company and job applications. You can even do some short pre screening interviews to interested passersby.
It’s a competitive hiring landscape and what worked before likely won’t work now. It’s time to write a new and potentially better hiring playbook. Your business is growing and opportunity abounds. Don’t miss out because you don’t have the help you need.

Recharge and Reset for 2024
It’s January. Last year is still visible in the rear view mirror but the road ahead is 2024. I talked a lot about looking back on 2023 last month. December is always a good time to reflect on the past 12 months and it’s important to stop and remember the wins and the...
What are your (business) traditions?
Every year around November I go to my local coffee shop and I order a Pumpkin Spice Latte. The funny thing is, I don’t even like PSLs. I never drink those sweet syrupy coffee drinks. I’m more of a ‘straight cup of the bold roast with just a pinch of half and half’...
Do you trust your GPS?
I was on my way to a therapy appointment downtown the other day. And yes, before you judge, I believe everyone should have a therapist in their lives. So, I was on my way to my appointment and my GPS instructed me to turn off on a completely different street miles...
I’m a recovering corporate junkie
I realized the other day that I’m a junkie. To be more specific I’m a recovering junkie. I’m a recovering corporate junkie to be exact. There, I’ve said it. I feel somehow lighter, like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders. I’m not good at sharing the personal...
What Can I Reasonably Expect a Pet Sitting Employee To Do?
I was seated next to a very nice lady at a networking event a few weeks ago. She was a fellow coach and we got to chatting about our coaching experiences. We ended up making plans to get together the following Wednesday for coffee. Terrific! Tuesday evening arrived...
Do you have trust issues?
I don’t trust people. If you’re like me, and I believe you are because you’re an entrepreneur, you don’t trust people either. Okay I don’t mean that entirely. Obviously, I have people in my life that I trust. My family, friends, colleagues. But when it comes to my...
How are you doing on your 2023 goals?
Here we are almost done with February so I thought it would be a great time to ask, how are you doing on your 2023 goals? You spent valuable time (presumably) in November or December thinking about your business goals for the coming year. You hit January 1 and you...
Don’t go crazy over the holiday
If you are a professional pet sitter you don’t have holidays. There, I’ve said it, it’s out there. It’s the ugly truth that no one talks about. I remember when I worked in the corporate office. I would anxiously await Thanksgiving and Christmas because it meant...
Are you a Prepper?
If you own a pet sitting business with one or more employees, you’re probably in the midst of losing your mind while you try to accommodate everyone’s last minute requests for holiday pet sitting. While you can’t force clients to do better about planning ahead you can...
I told you this would happen – Advice you wish you’d gotten
As an entrepreneur you get advice. Solicited and unsolicited, minuscule and huge, helpful and irritating. It comes from everyone and everywhere. In the beginning, especially you listen with rapt attention, eagerly absorbing everything you’re told with anxious...
